Gee, I live in a big country, a big city, and we have a great transport system in the Chicago area. And I don't have a driver's license. Never needed or wanted one either.

Well, wish me luck- I'm working on programming a new piece of software in my spare time that will create freight waybills and cargo lists for my model railroad. It will play a big part in railway operations.

I'm also taking an ancient IBM PS/1 Consultant I had in storage with a 486SX and Win95, and loading Win95 on it. I will use this by my railway to run the program.

Pure luxury. :D
Well we have a car and it seemed silly that only one of us had a license. The commute to work for both of us is not that long but really annoying. It is just as fast for me to ride my bike as to ride the bus to work. It takes about 30 minutes, but the way home is 40 minutes...
The schedule for busdepartures also fit me really bad, so there is another reason.
And the last reason - Driving is really fun :D And I am not a speeder.
Oh and we have our little summer-residence which have no public transportation going near it too.
How come you don't have a license?

That's what all rookies say until they havfe their first major acident. I really don't understand why you need a car in such a small country witrh such a great public transportation system
So, living in a small cottage with a bunch of candles at hand makes it bad to join the power grid?

I personally hate driving, and prefer walking cycling and public transportation to driving myself in almost every situation. I hardly ever drive (which is bad, as I'll remain the terrible driver I am), and whenever I'm staying at my parents', they try to convince me to borrow their car and drive around a bit. I always refuse. :| Cars don't do a thing for me. -_-

I used to live in northest corner of Finland. Distances in there were something that must be difficult to imagine for people living in central europe for example. Just to tell some examples:

Nearest ALKO (it's a alcohol shop owned by government, which has monopoly of selling hard liquours in Finland) was 70 Km away.
Nearest town (not village, but town) was ~300 Km away.
Nearest shop selling sports/hunting related equipments was 70 kM away.
Some of my school mates lived ~150 kM away.

So basically driver lisence is a must. Good thing was that speed limits were made to be ignored, since nearest place where was a 'stable' police station was ~150 kM away :D (Okay, we had a police station in our village, but the police was not always there. Basically that station was used when they did some investigations etc.)

I must admitt that when I got my lisence, I did drive like nuts... Nowadays I have obviously got old, since I usually do obey the speedlimits, and am quite carefull driver...

Certainly Pitkin, anyway who would want to trade those romantic dinners at candle light, the dark alley and the corpses of tax inspectors fertilising the garden for something as trivial as eletricity  :D

I reckon in Finland, Sweden and Norway are special cases, but Denmark is smaller than Belgium. You probably can cross the country while running the Marathon

Cross the country while running a marathon???
Not really. The country is 43094 square miles. Most people only see Denmark as Jutland, which is the peninsula that tops off Germany, but there are quite a few islands, the biggest being Zealand (Sjælland) where the capital of Copenhagen is, and then Fuen (Fyn) and Bornholm (the island placed below Sweden.)
Also Greenland and the Faroe Island is part of the Danish version of commonwealth. Iceland was too, but was made independent in 1944.

Some facts:
Are you aware that we are the oldest kingdom in the world?
Are you aware that we have not gotten the Euro, and still use the Danish Krone?
Are you aware that we at some point had the mightiest fleet in the world?
Are you aware that most of Scandinavia was at one point Danish? Sweden, Norway and the baltic countries have all been Danish regions...
So have a big deal of upper Germany and bits of England.

Really, Denmark doesn't use the Euro? I thought all of Europe used it now. Oh, well, there's the good old fashioned American ignorance for ya. :)

Anywya, how is everyone today? It's hard to be too upbeat with the dismal day, but the sun's starting to shine through, so it's getting better, I think.

I know that but each one of those Islands individualy has at least 1 point from which you can go coast to coast in less than 42 Km

1- That is arguable, we have our coutry with definite borders and name going back since 1249 (excluding the colonies, obviously). How about you guys

2- Yes I do, I do read the newspapers. (Not sure if that is a good thing, tough)

3- So did we and England, just a little bit more recently

4- I know that, you had all Scandinavia under your control and in time of the Viking Invasions you had a large bit of England, you also controled Schleswig-Holstein. You still have Greenland under your admnistration

Oh. I obviously did not mention this...

~250 kM to the nearest railwaystation... Almost no busses running. And even if there happened to be a bus going where you wished, (not to mention the buss caming back within the same day too...) when distances are what they are, it takes ages with busses.

Well - in that case I might enlighten the situation a bit more

Denmark is officially a monarchy from around year 940 AD - it isn't know specifically, but at least from 985 AD everything you understand as Denmark today was gathered and ruled by one king (to the degree it was possible with the national build up during that time) - also today Queen Margrethe II can be lead back to our first king in a direct line (with as much certainty as it is possible over a span of 1000 years) - that is what makes danish monarchy special - whereas for instance japanese empire goes around 1500-2000 years back, but hasn't been ruled by the same line throughout all these years

Also what you understand as Denmark today has always been danish, except the southren part of Jutland which were lost in 1864, and not regained until ... 1920 (I think ^^' - not exactly sure about the last year - might've been 1921)

as a funny sidenote I might add that the danish flag is also among the oldest in the world - if not the oldest national flag - the legend says it fell from the sky during a great battle in Estonia in the year 1219 AD, securing danish victory - it is certain that it is about that time that Denmark got it's flag
They say that it takes a second to meet a special person
An hour to appreciate her
A day to love her
But an entire life to forget her

Never to be forgotten

Dannebrog IS the oldest flag in the world, so no need to ponder on that one :D
Funny enough it was also one of the companies in the army's platoon flag... What a coincidende that god should decide to throw the same flag from the sky to secure Danish victory

This discussion is making me thirsty, where is my barrel of beer ;beer ;slurp

Yeah, so was my work on my model railroad just now. I had a bunch of streetlights that had been installed for a long time but never wired. That's fixed now. I even took a broken one and refitted it into a building light on a factory. I'll take some pics soon. I drank a 22 ounce bottle of Pepsi just like that. (Working underneath my railway is very cramped and tedious- I get nervous with the maze of wires, and with the hot spotlight, start sweating.

hey all sorry that I haven't been around much, I have been lurking just not posting.

Ok and now I am going to go into dizi bad mood mode for a minute

//bad mood mode on
I ordered a few DVDs from amazon last week and they gave me a tracking number like they always do so I can follow the prgress of my delivery. They were suposed to be here on friday but they nevr showed up so I thought delayed post, Saturdays post shows up still no DVDs so I check the tracking and it said that I should have gotten them on friday. Nope I was in all friday and no DVDs with the post that did come. So I waited yesturday to see if they would show up and they didn't. Today I decided to walk up to the sorting/delivery office to see if they know anything...nope sorry can't help you with that its not here, but phone our customer support and get in contact with amazon about it. So I checked my order on the amazon website and noticed that my postal code was one letter wrong...now this hasn't effected any of the deliveries that I have had in the past (and I have ordered a lot of stuff from amazon over the past couple of years I have lived here). Anyway Email amazonasked them what I could do to locate my package say that the post code is wrong but if this was such a big deal then nothing I ordered would have got here. Also to them that the postcode was for the street I used to live in and if they just went off the house number and the postecode it would have been delivered to the house next door to my parents and I had already talked to them to see if it was delivered there. They respond with...

Dear Customer

Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk.

Unfortunately, we are unable to change your order, as it has already entered the dispatch process. Please
accept our apologies for any inconvenience this causes to you.

For future reference, please note that you may change address details
option online via Your Account, as long as your order has not entered
the dispatch process.
Please let us know if this e-mail answered your question:

yes this email was so bloody helpful wasn't it...I know that it has been dispatched already I wouldn't of wrote a lengthy email saying that I had checked with neighbours just incase it went to the wrong house, checked with the person who lives at where the postcode andhouse number directed, and walked for 45mins to get to the sorting office to see if it was there. For god sake do these people read the first line of the email and think they know what the question is that I have asked. Now I am willing to take resposablity for the postal code being a street out and that causing a problem, but to respond with that email and having the nerve to send an email that doesn't have anything to do with the question that I asked and only has something to do with the first 2 sentances of the email.

//bad mood mode off

I hope everyone else is having a great day, I was going to start learning PHP today but then I ended up having to try and sort out the above problem. Sorry to bring the tone of this place down but I had to vent some steam before pressing no and explaining that what they wrote has nothing to do with what I asked, and that I would like a full respose to the question in which I asked...

Sorry about your Amazon experience, Dizi. I don't use them myself (I go through eBay mostly or a few local suppliers for computer parts), but I can see your bad mood.

My day is fairly good- I'm hand building some warehouses for my railway. Here's how I'm doing it: I'm taking some small cardboard boxes, ones in fairly good condition. Then I apply brick paper over the cardboard, in sheets cut to fit the sides. Then for the corners, I am using wood soup stirrers that are about one scale foot wide. These look like corner cornices, and will be painted a concrete color. (I was at a buffet lately and a friendly manager gave me a package of the stirrers, as I thought they were the right size for scale lumber planks too). Then do all the trim with wood and balsa. Cut out windows and use hard plastic packaging for window inserts. Use gray sandpaper for the roof.

What kind of an answer is that to your email, Dizi-san... it looks like an automated message, sent by some bot after recognizing a few keywords like 'delivery' and 'address'. -_- As the city and street names were correct, the delivery shouldn't be too far away, but most probably they end up somewhere around Wellington, New Zealand. :(

On happier side, your warehouse looks cool, Railo-san; if you get the roof fixed it'll look just like a real one. ^_^

As for myself... oh, I'm so tired. Been sick and working, and have the kind of feeling that I'd be getting sick again. Three more workdays this week, and then Saturday and Sunday off... sigh, I could've used one day off this week, Friday preferably; I should visit the capital for book-hunting and some events, not to mention cleaning up and tidying my apartment after months of disorder, but it'll all have to wait for another week. I've no time or energy to do anything but complain. -_-

I'm heading to bed, as an indentured servant.
