JNKPlat 07

Post by jayenkai »

Opening Rant
I just noticed that my number of game files here is 3!
THREE!!!
I make AGameAWeek.com! I can't seriously have my number of "Good Games" that I've posted here be as low as three!

So, I'm heading into my archive, and posting this..
If it does well, I'll go grabbing more from the big bag of Jay, and we'll get that figure up a wee bit!

JNKPlat - Origins
Originally written in QBasic at College, JNKPlat is where that little guy in my Avatar (Platdude) comes from. Initially concieved as "What would happen if you took a bog-standard Maze/Sokoban game, and flipped it into a Platformer", it's since upped a wee bit, and become more of an action platformer.
But I always make sure the puzzles in there, 'cos it'd be rubbish without it!

JNKPlat 07
Ten years later, and I'm still remaking the game, in what appears to be somewhat of an annual test of my skills!
Each year it gets slightly better, and after the success of the first Nintendo DS edition (06!) I've added a few fun new features.
(Although, for the record, the next DS edition (08) has even MORE new features than this!!)

Gameplay Video!

Download!
JNKPlat 07

25 levels included.

The Super Important Bit
Cursors to run, and up and down to use ladders.
Z to "HOLD".. As in, hold it to hold! Don't let go, unless you want to let go of what you're holding!
X will jump LEFT
C will jump RIGHT..
Don't be scared of the fact that there's two jump buttons!!

The Future!
JNKPlat DS 08 is available for folk who use DS flashcarts, but otherwise that's all I'll say on the subject.. Not sure of the rules of DS stuff in this forum, might not be suitable!

JNKPlat 09 hasn't been started.
..
Yet!

Don't panic! "H~S: Horizontal Shooter" was finally validated some days ago and will be on the site within the next few days..:)

About "JNKPlat 07": The gameplay video looks quite promising. Will try it out as soon as I find the time.
And of course you can post about the DS version of your game in this forum (as long as it's still freeware).

Just had a run at this, and I think it is really cool. Had some issues at first with figuring out what I was able to do, but as soon as I found out then I played it with a lot of fun.

Thanks!

You know there's a newer one, right?!

This one turned out nicely, but folk didn't bother making levels, and it just kinda vanished.
The newer one got kinda popular for a while, and now has over 100 levels, and will be on the cover-DVD of "Domashny PK", soon!! Woot!! (It's a Ukranian PC magazine that I've never heard of!!)

I knew about the newer ones, but I have to play them from the earlier ones towards the later ones, as I might otherwise think the game is getting worse and worse... Gives a whole new meaning to backwards engineering...

lol! I try to keep JNKPlat around about the same each year.
There are slight graphical changes, like how the little tiny blue spheres in this one become MUCH BIGGER in future ones, and I can't ever seem to settle on what the door is meant to look like, so that's forever changing, but on the whole it looks the same each time.
The animation's been getting much better (it wasn't animated before this one!) and the whole thing runs a wee bit smoother each time I re-write it.. But.. Those don't really help too much. The game is in the gameplay, even more so with a JNKPlat title, since the levels are locked into a specific grid-based framework, and it's more about hitting the buttons to get the job done than it is about hitting them at the right time.

Ooh, I'm getting all "Platdude Protective" again, aren't I! I can't help myself, I've fallen in love with this game. silly me.

2010 (YouTube) features nice big fuzzy graphics!
2009 (YouTube) has everything in blocky 3D-ness, which looks lovely, and probably would've been more popular, except the demo died a horrible death when everyone (literally everyone!) complained about the two jump buttons. :( People don't like to use two jump buttons :( Except they didn't complain about it being in 2010. Go figure!!

Alternative moan

I'm not sure why the flash isn't working here anymore, btw! I noticed even you had trouble getting it going, the other day, too. Any chance we could, at least, get some nice little YouTube bbcode!? :)

I absolutely love this game! I can't say it any other way. Great retro look and feel, excellent level design (some of the levels are quite tricky), amazing ideas (changing to Mario and Sonic style) and an editor which is very easy to use.

One of your best games in my eyes! And did I say that I love it?

Very good platformer. And it feels like a real platform arcade game should feel.

Yes, you're our personal god of freeware games. No other developer has as many games on our site :notworthy:

But of course we don't know any other developer who creates as many games... ;)

And the gametitles just emphasize the fun in this. :)
