I tried Hattrick when it was first launched. Wasn't much of a success. And why would I go online, when offline I was playing Championship manager?

So I have been there, propably won't go there again :D

Have also played Hattrick, but don't play it anymore. I had a team for 2 years. My biggest archivement was a promotion to the 5th division... But anyway it's a great game...

No. But I might at some point. I've always been hooked on CM the 00/01 season. So I actually only tried a couple of other games in that genre.

Well I am playing single player training also, but I ask again... Is there any chance that someone know how to make a dedicated server for this forums members only? So that we can play eachother...?

Server would be cool. I tried Trackmania today (in practice mode) and it seems it could be lot of fun in multiplayer... Ive created online account, but I dont even think of trying to play before good training...

The most annoying fact is that authors forgot (?) about Poland :( . What's weird even such small countries like Qatar are represented... :? So I play as Dane :p .

I have found out that TN is still sold via Amazon, so it is not freeware:

Usul, eventhough it might be sold in a store somewhere, doesn't necessarily mean it's not freeware. Freeware has nothing to do with the fact that the publisher also sells it on a CD or something, that's the vague abandonware criteria. For example, you can buy CDs for many Linux distributions from Amazon too, but they are also available for free download on their own websites.

The game was and still is available free of charge at http://www.trackmanianations.com

And we have permission for hosting anyway.

I dont understand German THAT GOOD - what exactly is being sold if game is free to download in full version? Someone wants to make money off unaware ones?

Well, the game is quite huge, so maybe it's easier for someone to buy the CD than download it. It's just 10 euros anyway, which probably covers packaging and the CD. So the price is more about covering costs than making profit.

Heck zyxxer. Tell me its 10 eur + shipping, and i say it is about making profit... Some chinese boxes, and cheap cds... With 10 eur you prepare 10 games at least. If the volumes are decent, that makes nice amount of money... Not to mention the seller probably forgot the taxes... (okay, this is just my guessing...)

I know that it may be easier for someone to buy game than download (but cheaper? I doubt it), but it's not the point. If game is available for free from official site making money off it is illegal. If there were official box release in the past with posters and such and someone wants to sell it that's ok, but afaik Trackmania NATIONS always was and remains freeware. So what exactly is being sold? I see box cover what makes me think that there was probably limited (promotional?) edition in the past... But afaik TM Nations was freeware and downloadable from the beginning.

edit:
Since this Koch Media company looks quite big I think they just bought the license... What's the point of selling license and making game downloadable at the same time I dont quite understand. :?

Actually, selling freeware is not necessarily illegal. It depends on the original lisence. For example everything published under GPL can be sold, rented, edited, burned and generally freely handled as long as few things are done correctly. For example license must be included as well as source code, and changes must be documented. However track mania is obviously not published under GPL... (i have not personally read the lisense though) Besides i find it ethically questionnable to make profit out of freeware...

Yes Maz, you're probably right that there's some profit involved, but at that price we're talking about low budget games, something Trackmania Nations clearly is not. If development costs are counted, I don't think Nadeo is making profit selling CDs.

Nadeo can do what ever they wish with Trackmania. They can offer it for download for free, but give others right to redistribute it on net, let Koch Media sell it on CD in Germany... that's the their copyright.

eMTe, you're right that it might be a bit unfair to sell people stuff they could get on the net for free. Koch Media thinks that they can make some money selling those CDs, probably in addition to Amazon, Trackmania Nations is available at some supermarkets, but I doubt its available on any speciality stores as there people know better. I guess this depends on how you want to look at it, a service for people who don't want to download or a small scam to get people pay for something they could get for free if they knew.

But there's nothing illegal going on here. We have a right to distribute it, Koch Media has a right to distribute it for a fee, Nadeo gets exposure and people buy Trackmania United...

Does anyone know if we have TMN client for linux done? I know there's gameserver which can be ran on linux, but I have never heard of actual game client that is runnable on Linux. And Wine cannot play this game - thanks to starforce protection :| I know there's a bugreport about the starforce support on Wine tracker, but it seems that wine developers are not that enthusiastic in correcting that (propably because fix might not be so easy, and because they cannot add support to all copy protection mechanisms out there.) Well, bug correction is targeted to wine 1.2.0, but I assume it may be postponed...
