DOWNTIME COMING - PLEASE READ!

Post by Chroelle »

We are moving the site from a PHP4 server to a PHP5 server beginning this evening (Tuesday) hopefully. But we do not know how long it will take. We have been told it might take up to 48 hours.
So please do not plan any changes in the site in this time - dont write reviews (well please do - just dont submit them:), dont add games to the site and dont do alot of validation (you can play the games, just wait up with the voting).
Everything should work perfectly afterwards, but if it doesn't please let us know. I am available at Christian[at]Connect-webdesign.dk if you need any help or want to know what is going on.

Hopefully the site should be back online within a few hours but you never know.

In the meantime go play some games and submit them later on. Maybe write a review or prepare some questions for an interview. :)

To clarify, we expect to be up and running by Wednesday morning latest. But you know how it is with all technical things. Also, we're just moving from a server to another so in the best case, you won't notice a thing.

There is a chance that if you do any changes (upload files, validate...) when the migration is on-going that the changes are reflected in the old (PHP4 server) and not in the new (PHP5). We'll update this thread with information when everything is ok.

If we don't, well, it was nice knowing you.... =)

I am hoping they will pass quietly by...

Also I am worrying why nothing is showing up on the phpinfo? How come nothing is happening... Could we be looking at the wrong place?

I've no idea. Looks like the Surftown guys aren't doing anything.

I asked and got an answer. They accidentally put our case on hold instead of To-do, and that meant we werent getting serviced. We will get serviced right away, and that means within..48 hours...

...and we're back.

edit: not entirely. Please let me know if you see page that's either
a) blank
b) says the following

Code: Select all

Fatal error: Cannot re-assign $this in /somepath/somefile.php on line <line>

The old wise wizard spoke never spoke truer words.

Here's a short summary of why the site went dead:

What happened when we went to PHP5 was that because we were running such an old version of the Categories Hierarchy MOD (from 2003) that was completely unaware of PHP5 (first version in 2004). The author of that MOD had innocently chosen to use a variable called $this in many interesting places and unfortunately it became a reserved keyword in PHP5.

The solution was pretty straightforward, I had to hunt down all the instances where this was happening and replaced "$this" to "$thisthing".

There is still an issue with MOD that uses admin_links_cat.php which makes the Forum Admin panel not show (not that there's need to use it often, but...). Because of the interesting ways all these PHP files call each other, I haven't been able to isolate the issue further yet.

Also, if the forum was working for you since yesterday, it was probably because your ISPs DNS-entries still pointed to the old PHP4 server.

This probably doesn't need to be a global announcement anymore...
