The new favicon

Post by Chroelle »

Well some of you might have noticed that there is a small favicon (small icon next to the adress) now represented here on CWF. I wanted to see if I could make it work first, and it seems it kicked in after a couple of days. The current favicon is only our banner-logo sized down, and due to a colorlimitation also recolored. I am going to try and make something more tasteful and simple soon, but please if you have any ideas let me know. This will be somewhat representative of our site. It will be the mark that people know us by if they mark us as a favourites site.

Most modern browsers support favicons that are actually .png's (or .gifs), so you don't actually need to worry about color limitations etc. (The only exception are some now outdated versions of MSIE).

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon

How I have done things is a bit different, however. My preferred solution so far is to actually have a favicon.ico (which is a ICON file) and this HTML snippet in the HTML HEAD:

Code: Select all

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://wwwexample.org/favicon.png" type="image/png">
All browsers that I've used then go and get the .png-file instead, the .ico is there "just for in case".

It's really messed on up on my end. Maybe you're changing it right now or something.

You mean it's too small?

I agree, it's undecipherable atm.

I am trying to look into something that looks better atm, but if you have any ideas for something that could represent us with that size icon please let me know.
I am trying some stuff out for my webdesign-site too, so if you want to see how it looks there then just press the www button under this post. Or press the huge CONNECT WEBDESIGN AD in the bottom of the page. :D
(It should work shortly)

Due to the small size of favicons and the fact that we don't really have a logo, I suggest just a huge "C".

Favicon with most letters (of those which I know well) is IMDb. M can be hardly distinguishable from H, though.

YouTube has seven letters and its logo is next to being clear.

It's possible imho. Tell me what size must f-con be and I'll play with it a little.

Well so far I am trying to keep it under 1kb. But it seems next to impossible to get something clear done without being boring. But please give it a shot, since I am just walking around the same paths over and over again.

The size doesn't really matter, given that it's only loaded once and 1 kb is downloaded in less than a second even on a dial-up.

But think 16x16 or something like that...:D
I tried to make a new favicon and added it and so far I haven't seen neither that or the old one the last two days... Have anyone seen either one.

Here, 505 bytes.

I can do much prettier one, so this one is only to show that it is possible to keep size under 1 kB.
