Zyx. Could you do some nifty javascript art for the 'lowered DL speeds'? I tried adding a image next to DL button for non registered users and use title tag but... Well, with IE the transparency of the piccie is not working, and with firefox the text is not fully displayed...

It seems Maz had some time left over today. Good work mate!
I think the idea of lowered dl-speeds was brilliant. That might get us more members.
I hope we can keep it this way!

I'm really curious what will happen. When I just look at today I expect an increasing number of downloads for sure. Alone for the last 12 hours there were 6 downloads of "Buffy" and 4 downloads of "TAGAP". And a new member as well...

That is just wayyyy cool.
I have to remember this link. Could we maybe put it in the right side menu for validators and admins on the front page?

Sex sells, but a link on the developer's site is even better. Let's place a bet when "TAGAP" will be first place in the download statistic...

@Maz
Great link, that's a thing I always wished for. Good way to get an overview about which games are downloaded even if they are not in the top 5.

Thanks! :goodjob:

I think it will be a matter of the beginning of next month before TAGAP takes first.
But it really is cool to see which games gets downloaded at all, and which has most downloads.

Could you add that to the crew-box on the frontpage to the right? That would be cool to look over from time to time...

It seems we are fully capable of living with this. Maybe we need to be more visible about the lowered downloadspeed - but otherwise this works perfectly.

I have been thinking about this for some time now, and I cant help but wonder if we should set the permitted download speed of unregistered visitors up a bit. When I try to look over the last 300 downloads alot of them are close to eachother like
17 2009-02-16 07:06:40 The Queen of Fighters Anonymous
18 2009-02-16 07:05:16 The Queen of Fighters Anonymous
19 2009-02-16 07:05:15 The Queen of Fighters Anonymous
20 2009-02-16 07:05:14 The Queen of Fighters Anonymous
21 2009-02-16 07:05:14 The Queen of Fighters Anonymous
22 2009-02-16 07:05:14 The Queen of Fighters Anonymous
23 2009-02-16 07:05:13 The Queen of Fighters Anonymous
24 2009-02-16 07:05:12 The Queen of Fighters Anonymous
25 2009-02-16 07:05:11 The Queen of Fighters Anonymous
This tells me that somebody tried to dowload this and thought something was wrong and restarted their download - oh and not just once but 9 times.

I think this is cositng us some positive wibes. I would therefore love it if we could alter the speeds to a more acceptable speed. Maybe this will mean that we get more backlinks out there too, as more will maybe use us to point to a game instead of some other faster site. For me it is not so much about getting members as it is getting visitors. :)
Visitors spreads the word as well, and also makes us more known out there. While it seems that only a handfull of members actually end up posting something. So is this doable? Maz or Zyx -not sure who to ask about this?

I didn't consider that option... But my questions still stands.

Well... we have to check what's actually going on.

There are many solutions, but they depend on what problem we want to solve. Thanks to things like OpenID, Facebook Connect and Google Friend Connect, we could require users to login with their FB, Google or other account, but not necessarily register at here. I don't think this solves any problems, but I've been just thinking how we might use those to more easily get more members who don't want to register to yet another site.

Anyway, I think too that the above example has to be download accelerator or something like that, because no human acts in less than second. I went through the logs and things like that happen time to time, where a game is started to download just seconds apart. It might be just a download accelerator. (or, even coincidence, because we don't track IP addresses at that point)

We can, of course, change the download limits.

Also I would love it if we could make it clearer that there is a limit for non-registered downloaders. Like where we ask for the number of toes etc, we could write that there is a limit of so and so much but you can avoid that by registrering. I can't remember what the current limit is I must admit.

Actually, it could be wise to change whole DL system. It was done to prevent non registered users from accessing downloads, and it is quite a heavy implementation. Hence we need the limit for technical restrictions.

But now when guest downloading is allowed, we could as well just hit the straight links to games on game info and let the apache handle file reading and writing, instead of current system. It would speed up the downloads quite a lot. And in fact, if I remember correctly, even though the current DL system allowed placing the actual downloads in .htaccess restricted folder (from which php - which ignores htaccess - can read the files) from which the straight downloads are not possible - htaccess protection was never added
