Old games that are available as freeware now.

Post by Chroelle »

Here you can list the old games that is available as freeware now, so that we can make them available for download on this page. Please link to them if you do not have them yourself. Remember that some sites have released old games as freeware, where it is not allowed for us to use them on our site. They are just free for the members of that particular site.

Please doublecheck that we are allowed to use them. Feel free to ask our help for this.

Freeware I can think of, off the top of my head:

- Decker (great hacker game); freeware available under GNU Public License (http://www.caro.net/dsi/decker/)

- Aethra's Chronicles (RPG); freeware, get from Underdogs or my copy

- Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM, RPG); freeware, must only be distributed in the packages created by Thomas Biskup, the maintainer of the game. The packages must remain complete and all components must not be altered in any way. (http://www.adom.de/adom/download.php3)

Dammit I knew I had to get my FTP-server up and running again...This way people could just upload it to my server and I could get them placed from there.

It looks good though. Could you maybe write the genres, downloadsizes and such here, so it is easier for me to make the downloadpage. Maybe production year too.

We are not interested in the so-called abandonware since there might be trouble with it ? So only freeware ?

Exactly. I don't want to have to battle it out with some lawyer team, with all the laws on their side...

Only FREEWARE. And please be advised that some sites refer to their games as freeware, but the game in it self is not free for all to use as pleased, but it is FREE to download.
So only Freeware that is legal to upload on this site, please.
If in doubt, say so, and we can help you check if we can use the game.

Thank you for cleryfying :) I myself find it very difficult to actually find the right place to look for such informations, and download sites doesn´t always clerify which type the game is.

Here is the list of formerly paid games released as freeware:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abandonware

Yes, you never know where youll find useful infos. :p

Im not sure about Team17 's Alien Breed, cause the company recently asked Underdogs to remove all downloads of their products.

I'll check all listed titles tomorrow and post the results of my little survey here. Of course if someone wants to help - dont hesitate to do it. ;)

One question. You plan to make an only pc games based site?

Well this is abandonware right ? The type that we don't want on the site..
I have tried all games I liked to play which i might think people would find interesting.. But even a game that I was 99% sure was freeware and not abandonware I could find a clear answer..

No, these games are now FREEWARE and can be legally downloaded.

The list needs checking though, but 99% of these games are freeware now, for sure.

Might be the name that tricked me.. But they keep saying abandonware and that made me think it was wrong.. After reviewing it again I can see that it does say that some of it is released as freeware at the same time as a new game is published

Looks good. I will look at the list later on. Maybe you can find someone to help you out in a new thread.

One answer: Well, I plan to make this an all PC games based site, but I have been wrong before :D

What are you thinking about?

OLD GAMES.... It's not old yet. Scythe has a good definition in his forum...

Maybe this belongs in online gaming...
Can you play it offline single player?

Some ROMs can be legally downloaded (afaik ALL ZX Spectrum ones), also some Apple II and Amiga games and probably a couple of games for other systems. What I mean is they are NOT ABANDONWARE and are now legally distributed under permission of copyright holders. I'm not into emulation, so personally I dont mind if there are Spectrum games or not, but I thought maybe youll be interested.

Ive checked all games from wikipedia's list, but it's hard to say anything atm... Some of these titles are considered freeware, but there's no proof of it, some of them are definitely freeware, but can be downloaded only from developer's site (Arena f.e.). The best way will be probably to email companys and ask about the status. Revolution Software's games (Beneath a Steel Sky and Lure of The Temptress) are freeware and are downloadable from scummvm site, but again, they may have exclusiveness for these games.

It would be great to have these games here, cause they are true classics, I'll email asap Rev Soft and ask for status.
