Links to freeware games sites and games indexes

Post by Chroelle »

Well this is where you post you links to websites who carry QUALITY freeware games. That way members can go there and find good games for this site. I will try to keep this post edited, so that all links of the thread is shown here.

There are some remakes, and a few games that look ok. Unfortunately I don't have the time to go deeper with this, but maybe someone felt like submitting something from in here. The HP might look like it is abandoned for now, which actually leaves the question of moral out...

My first thought was "I must make it a sticky". :)

I'll update this topic soon, I have a few nice sites on my mind...

For a start...

http://www.fullgames.sk/

Well made site with lots of good games (that's where Ive found Quadrax) and some average. Site contains links to some demos too if you're interested.

And some more...

http://www.gamehippo.com/

http://www.freewaregames.net/

http://www.planetfreeplay.com/ (of course)

http://www.acid-play.com/

http://www.caiman.us/

And no, I dont post these links because they pop up as first after googling. They're on top of google list because they are just the best...

I think as soon as we're gather more games and site will have new look we should get in touch with above sites and make some links exchange... This may bring us a couple of new members and, what's equally important, more prestige in freeware world... :)

True. That is good reasoning. Link exchange would have to work with HP's like Moshboy's in the top, as we hope to do a lot of cooperation, and others following. Sites with most games that fit this page should also be in the top.

Just added some new links, and it would be great if someone could go gamehunting in those... Especially the Caiman section... That alone should keep a member busy :D

http://www.alex-soft.net/index.html <- includes abandonware (Dos)

http://www.dosgames.com/ <- name says it all

http://www.food-force.com/ <- supply food to hungry people

http://www.downloadfreegames.co.uk/index.asp <- all sorts of stuff

http://www.worldoffreegames.com/ <- same again

First two sites contain lots of abandonware and also some warez, so I'm not sure if they qualify here... As for FoodForce I dont have time to check it - is it online game? The last one contains abandonware stuff too... Chrolle...?

Nah that's cool... I've since spent some time reading what exactly CWF aims to do and can see that some of them are clearly not suited.

MY only concern is of course that members will submit warez to the site, so I think we need someone trained to look through these sites in search of GREAT freeware. OTher than that...I will look into them later on, and see what they are all about.
BTW: CAiman.be also links to some abandonware it seems, so please be aware of this too...

I just added this one to the list, as it is a thread somewhere else about released games and freeware remakes of oldies. If someone have the time to look them over it would be great! :)

Eric: Which ones do qualify? Actually I haven't looked them through, but if any of them apply to this site, please let me know. Just so I can add them to the list.

Two indexes of freeware games:

I'm unsure about the first one, cause it points to abandonware site. But this is absolutely great index, because it contains lots of old freeware titles from 80ies and 90ies (freeware sites are generally aimed at new games). So the last word belongs to administration.

Wikipedia entry, great and still updated (I hope so) list of formerly commercial games released as freeware.

I actually added it here, so that I would remember. I went there to download Notrium, and it seemed all his games were high quality, and I didn't have time to make threads...

Victory Games

http://www.victorygames.com.pl/

Probably biggest Polish freeware site with many shareware titles too, but freeware is first priority. Good news section, frequent updates, many less known titles. Polish only - ask me if you need help, but I think there'll be no need to - things are obvious generally. :D

DigiPen Institute of Technology

http://www.digipen.edu/main/Main_Page

/quoting wikipedia:

DigiPen Institute of Technology is a college located in Redmond, Washington which has a focus on art, computer science, and computer engineering with emphasis in creating video games. DigiPen is a high-profile college within the game industry.

(...)

Freshman year, Digipen students spend first semester working with an in-house IDE called the FUNEditor and must collaborate to make a text based game over the second semester. Sophomore year, student game teams must make graphical (2D) games. Junior year, the games must include networking, and often serve as the first real experimentation with physics and artificial intelligence. The senior games are significantly less restricted to allow for more artistic control, but must demonstrate technical competence and be in 3D.

The games are copyrighted and owned by DigiPen, but many of the best may be downloaded and played for free.

Downloadspage (HUGE number of titles  ):

I've been to DigiPen before, but at some point the site refused me entry for whatever reason, and I forgot all about it. Thankfully, it works again (just tried downloading that Hauser Hound game).

Game Giveaway of the Day

http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/

Not really a freeware page, but worth mentioning anyway. This site presents a single commercial game for free every day. Some of them are of poor quality, but sometimes there are pure gems to be discovered.

If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. So what's the catch?
