Mateusz Skutnik and his Pastel Games

Post by eMTe »

Mateusz Skutnik is creator of Covert Front and Submachine series - browser based games featuring original graphics, eerie atmosphere and - sometimes very hard - puzzles.

Apart from this (well, primarily), he's a comic book writer, architect and works as a flash animator.

Having finished Submachine 1 (and trying to finish Covert Front and S2 what seems to be harder than I expected) I can only recommend Mateusz's works. Maybe his games are not of Samorost quality, but definitely shine on the usually dull and cloudy browser games sky.

I renamed the topic since guy is slowly reaching somewhat a stardom as flash games creator.

There's a site devoted only to his games, here's the link:

And here's his latest game, DayMare Town.

Really tough one.

Well, I contacted ONE HALF of Pastel Games to see if they are interested in hosting their games by other sites and it seems the contact is broken. :P The other half awaits emailing.

Meanwhile...you can check this one. Isnt it lovely?

Ive finally finished all Covert Front games, now awaiting the final, fourth chapter. And several weeks ago I also beaten third part of Submachine. Tried to beat fourth one, but it is one of the longest flash games Ive ever come across and since state isnt saved I had to quit after several hours.

It seems like I am talking to myself here :D, but you really should try out pastel games. Together with Amanita Design and Ferry Halim (Orisinal) guys behind them are the most creative and successful flash programmers Ive found in web.

While I was playing oil rig section of Poacher, cold music reminded me of Submachine series, so I decided to check what's up at Pastel Games and - surprise - there are a couple of new games. Currently Im playing this one:

Dark western game with atmosphere reminiscent of Jarmusch's Dead Man, somewhat Diablo-esque music and tough puzzles. Worth checking!

Regarding the discussion in this thread the infestation burgeons. Yesterday Pater sumbits a zombie game, this night I finished this game, completely unaware that it will feature zombies, today I added a zombie game and we have new ad on CWF which is displayed when you enter game info page. It - surprisingly - leads to zombie page.

I was caught in the submachine network and finished games 4, 5 and 6. Now I'm stuck in 7, but I was stuck in 4 for a couple of months also, so 7th installment will fall too, sooner or later. I refuse to use walkthroughs, as always.

The surprising thing about Submachine games is that they are the nightmare to play (like most hidden object games), especially if you remember games like Ween by Coktel Vision which relied heavily on pixel hunting (here it is hotspot hunting). But Skutnik's Flash games have cult following, comparable only to Perry Halim's games (Orisinal site), so their popularity can't be overlooked.

Submachine 10 is out.

I have finished all 9 games without slightest hint and hope to finish the last one too. From the first look, it's bigger than all previous games combined, at least judging by the number of teleport bottles you find sometime at the beginning. It's so vast that one can surely get lost without pen and paper. Ambient music is another strong point, reminiscent of the darkest pieces by Radiohead. Looks like Mateusz decided to give the series the proper ending: difficult, vast and darker than anything he created so far.
