I've tried this and it works very well. It's design is pretty functional so it would probably be an advantage to have a working knowledge of the original to get around it quickly as the developers' documentation is rather scant.

Is there any place where I can find a manual for this game? I don't know how to do easy things. How do I get hammers that are needed for creating buildings? How do I get gold? How can I produce new units?
Game looks fine, but I don't know how to play it at all...

Pater is right, and I'm glad I'm not the only one here, I couldn't quite figure out the game, having never played Colonization myself. A manual would be very handy.
The game looks cool, but aside from that it will take a lot of playing to learn to do much.

Without trains America Stops- Support Amtrak
Old trains never die. They just sit in ruin and wait until the day they are taken in by a skilled craftsman and rebuilt to their former glory.

The original manual, should explain most of the concepts.
To be honest, I'd play the original - I find FreeCol too streamlined, sucks the life out of the game.

This game is so buggy, it's frightening! No wonder people have trouble with it. I've been trying to play it to take screenshots, and the computer won't end its turns and sometimes my menus disappear for no reason at all. I have to constantly save and load the game just to keep it running... and those bugs are within the first five minutes of play!
I take it this game is still under development, and I'm a little (more like very) unhappy we're going to put this unfinished game up, but... too late to vote. I guess I'll have to fight the bugs a little longer to take some decent screenshots.

Because of technical reasons I cannot delete the old (not working) download links at the moment, so please ignore them and use the download links that says "Newest Version". I will delete the old links as soon as possible...
P.S.: Something always goes wrong. One of the downloads (7.9 MB) is for Mac of course...

Freecol is a great way to play colonization again. It is not a perfect remake which I feel a bit sad about, but it is nonetheless a gameplay-wise remake, which really blows my whistle.
Loved the original - love the remake.
