It was Kwaidan, also known as Kaidan or Ghost Stories. Japanese, 1964. Widely known and made its way to popculture, so blame yourself for not guessing.

Now, this one should be much easier to guess without referring to imdb or google pics. I like to watch the movie from time to time, just like F/X and Beverly Hills Cop, it sort of co-forms my good mood triumvirate.
