I never was a fan of nethack so this one might not be the same "nerdgasm" for me as for others. :)

I neither like "Nethack" nor "Doom" very much, and still love this game... :D

Not the first time I copy/paste my post from another forum, but heck, who cares. ;)

Have you ever had a similar problem?

From 1st December I have a new flat (rented, easy there), but it's obvious now that Ill be searching (in fact, I do it already) for a new one. It's the small attic, not cheap and fully furnished, but instead of normal neighbours I have a pair of constantly partying youngsters, listening to loud ska or reggae or something (anyway, they love low frequency sounds), sometimes til 3 am. I dont know if they sleep to it or what (it's not hard to sleep to loud music when youre drunken or on drugs), but my requests for nocturnal silence have been left unanswered, Ive been told that I should have known that walls in there are not "normal" (yep, it's and old huge attic divided by plaster walls) and that I have to accept that it will stay that way. So now I have two solutions - move out or fight. I decided to move out.

If you decide for a war you have to be patient and consistent. Constant requests, threatening, official complaints to building administration, calling the police, waiting for police to arrive, etc. I dont have nerves. I informed the owner that I will leave before the end of January. At the moment the only way to sleep in this flat (not all nights are that horrible, luckily) is to put wax stoppers deeply in ear canals, move bedding into bathroom and sleep in a bathtub. Yep, it sounds funny, but it is not.

You can say that I should fight with them, call the police asap, but the truth is, that it's the endless battle. If they wont turn the music loud after 10 pm theyll do it earlier and it is not less irritating when you return from work and have to hear it. Before 10 pm I can hardly do anything from the legal point of view, and besides, as I said, I do not want to fight, I need silence. It's not worth, fighting for a small rented attic that youll leave someday anyway. You cant change somebody's lifestyle and habits fighting with him.

I wonder what would you do in my place.

PS: Sidenote, this is what happens when you divorce with a woman who keeps tight your disorganized life; sort of punishment. But it's the philosophical approach. ;)

Luckily I never had that kind of problem. I always was th one with the loud punk music... :P

But to be serious, I always was lucky with my neighbours and nearly never had any problems with them. And if there ever were some minor things, it was no problem to talk with them. I'm very happy about that as it is really much easier if you can be friend with your neighbours.

About your situation: I think you are right that it's senseless to fight if they are not willing to change anything in their behaviour. Calling the police normally helps just for a couple of minutes and talking to the building administration is sometimes hard to as they normally won't throw out people as long as they are not in danger of loosing lots of money (and as you probably have the smaller appartment they won't).
You could of course search something that get on their nerves too, for example loud noise while you're at work, but I'm not sure if it is worth the trouble.

Or getting a rooster to get them up bright and early - and then sell them the ear-plugs idea... That might make them think twice. :)

Sounds like a horrible situation to be honest, and I remember we had a similar problem when we lived in the small apartment some 8 years ago. Upstairs neighbours partied every wednesday, thursday and weekend nights until 2 at night and then came screaming down the stairs to go to the club, and returning drunken and disorderly around 5 waking everybody up there too.
I had more than a few times where I was up there with a smile and a pleasant request for them to turn down the music - and then I got around half an hour of peace before someone I didn't talk to turned up the music again.
The last I heard was that the girl that lived there went totally to sh*t with her life, and the boyfriend was just one of the biggest narcotics catches in Danish history - so pleasant people they was... :)

My best advice would be to get an even angrier neighbour to take the battles for you, and then silently slip away in January.

Shall I copy and paste my response, then? :D

I used to have neighbours who would blast loud music at all hours of the day, so I have an idea what you're going through. (They would turn it off at night, but I was in school at the time while working part-time and I couldn't count on doing all my sleeping at night)

Anyway, in answer to your implied question about what I would do, I suggest negotiating with them about the time they play their music. Maybe you can appeal to them to at least turn it down at certain times of the day/night when you need it turned down. If that doesn't work, maybe you can appeal to them to at least turn the bass down, or elevate the sub-woofer off the floor by putting it on top of a stool or something like that so it doesn't make the floor vibrate. (Personally, I can sleep through a lot, but heavy bass that makes the floor vibrate makes it very difficult)

These things didn't work with my aforementioned former neighbours because they were inconsiderate assholes, (long story there) but it might work for you. :)

Inconsiderate assholes suits my neighbours perfectly. Anyway, I threatened the girl (she seems to be the only true resident) with police and informing building administration, so she agreed to turn the music down after 22. Anyway, she left around 21:45 (probably to some party or her boyfriend), but before leaving she turned the basses and music up. Im leaving anyway, but at least I can hope that Ill be able to sleep through the upcoming month. If she wont find another way to show me that Im not welcome here and I should live here as little comfortable as possible.

Interesting. Nice to see that they are back from the dead. I think it's the first update for more than one year.

Bad news: It seems the bots are invading the forum. I just deleted three threads and there is another russian post which I think I will delete. I don't know if it is spam, but I don't think anyone would write russian in an english-speaking forum, if he really wants to communicate.

What prevents you?

Btw, ELIZA was created quite a time ago. 8)

Actually, none of us can be sure than one of us isnt a bot. I can be a bot, you can be a bot, Pater can be a bot. Are you 100% sure that Im not the invention of some mad programmer? I provide valuable conversation (only at times, to mislead you), I visit forum often and post in varied topics, I provide some facts about my life to elicit similar facts regarding other forum members, I am sometimes friendly, sometimes irritating (to mislead you), I seem to come from Poland and my English seems bad; see, now I even make fun of myself to make you believe that I am joking. So in fact, bot can be present here for years.

Btw, have you noticed the recent reality-crisis trend in blockbuster movies? Notable examples: Matrix, later Inception and Shutter Island. Soon we'll need Turing test for real humans. Like for me.

Of course, everything Ive just wrote is a joke. :D

You can't be a bot. There's no advertisement in your signature. But I'm not sure about Chroelle... :P

Talking about bots: I deleted several posts (which were all the same) of the Russian bot. I think it's very clever to make Russian bots invade an English forum. How much clicks on their ad do they expect if one can't even read it???

Btw, if there's anyone that sounds like a bot it's me. :)

I'm pretty sure jayenkai is a bot. He always links to this strange Socoder site and he claims to develop one game per week. Everybody knows that this is impossible for a human being... :jawdrop:  :stupid:
